Managing Credit Cards

Credit cards can get a person into a lot of trouble and for good reason. When misused, credit cards can lead to unnecessary debt that can become a financial burden.

But in the right circumstances, credit cards can be a powerful tool to help establish credit.

In the NeighborWorks Columbus homeownership program, we walk with people through the processes of building a strong financial foundation. This includes creating and maintaining a budget, helping people manage their debts and rebuild their credit scores, and for some it includes establishing credit in the first place.

This is where credit cards come into play, but many people wonder where to start. Which credit card should you get? How should you use it? These are the questions we will walk through now.

Who should get a credit card?

If you are struggling to manage your budget, it is not the time to get a credit card. But, if you have successfully built a money management plan and stuck to it, a credit card could be beneficial for you to boost your credit score.

Which credit card should you get?

There are several credit cards that are known as starter cards. You will want to ensure you don’t get a credit card that comes with a fee. You also want to ensure your card has a relatively low spending limit to start out with so you don’t get into trouble. To get the most benefit from your cards, you also want to get one that reports to all three major credit bureaus.

How do you use your credit card for the most benefit?

Spending isn’t usually an issue for people, right? If anything we need to be careful to not overspend, whether you’re using a credit card or any form of money.

But, what we’re talking about here is how to use your credit card in a way that actually provides a benefit to your credit and doesn’t hinder it.

There are a few key things to make a credit card work for you and not against you. The first is to set a monthly spending limit that is well within your budget. Some people choose to use it to only pay for gas, for example.

You also want to make sure the spending cap you choose is not the one the credit card company gives you. The best way to use this card is to spend no more than 30% of what your limit is at any given time. So, if your credit card gives you a $1,000 limit, you will want to make sure you never have more than a $300 balance.

Finally, and most importantly, make sure you pay your entire balance on time, every time. Setting up automatic payments is the best way to ensure you don’t forget.

Home for the holidays

Christmas came early for Juwan Martin this year when she bought her first home.

Juwan was among the first to enter NeighborWorks Columbus’ Homeownership Earned and Reached Together (HEART) Program in 2019, where she leased her home while working toward the goal of homeownership.

“It’s been such a blessing, and I now have something to leave for my children,” said Juwan, single mother to three children.

Prior to moving into her new home, Juwan and her young children lived in a house by the river, which was a breeding ground for allergens.

“For allergy sufferers like me and my son, it was awful just trying to breathe. I woke up with a headache every day,” said Juwan.

After nearly three years in her home, Juwan is happy to say the two have not had an episode like that since. This is the very definition of healthy housing. Not only has her home brought great physical health benefits—her family has thrived in their new space. Now a grandmother, Juwan says her family loves having a home for family to gather and a yard for her children and grandchildren to enjoy.

Breaking down our virtual homeownership process

In order to do our part to keep our customers, staff and community safe from COVID-19, NeighborWorks Columbus has temporarily closed its doors to the public. However, we want to reiterate to you all, that this doesn’t have to put a stop to your journey to homeownership.

In fact, our dedicated homeownership staff are working just as hard from their home offices to make sure good people like you can find good homes—and even in the midst of a global pandemic, we can seamlessly walk hand in hand (virtual hands, of course) with you each step of the way.

Here’s how our virtual process to homeownership works:

   Shadonna Woodcock, Intake Specialist

Shadonna is the first person you meet on your journey to homeownership. Once a potential customer (you, perhaps!) fills out a profile on our Website, Shadonna will contact you for an intake appointment. While these normally take place in person, it’s just as easy for Shadonna to let you know what documents she needs to see and for you to upload them online. She’ll walk you through that process seamlessly!

Kimberly Poole, HUD Certified Homeownership Counselor- GA73571572

Once you are ready for the next step, you will begin meeting with our Certified Homeownership Counselor Kimberly one on one—only these meetings will take place over the phone. Kimberly will help make sure you are completely prepared to own a home. For some, this will include just tailoring your budget; for others, you may need some work on your credit or just to build up a savings account. Rest assured, Kimberly will guide you through this to make sure you are financially ready for the next step.

Taylor Adams, Licensed Mortgage Loan Counselor, NMLS#1844480

Lastly, our in-house lending specialist Taylor, will help you secure the best loan and any downpayment assistance you may qualify for. She will complete a loan application with you over the phone and then send any documents for you sign electronically. This is really not so different from when we actually are working in the office!

   For Hispanic Customers:

Our services are also available in Spanish if that would be your preferred language. You will receive the necessary information in the language you are most comfortable with. Just request the language and you’ll be directed to speak with Kathy Rosado, Homeownership Service Line Manager.

While this is a strange time for all of us, please know that we are here with you and can still help you just as much as ever in the journey to homeownership. Give us a call or head to our Website to complete a customer profile and we’ll be in touch!

Success Story: Natasha Thorton Phillips

Natasha Philips came to NeighborWorks® Columbus as a newlywed looking to start her journey to homeownership. As an expectant mother caring for her aging father and teenage daughter, Phillips wanted to ensure she was making the right choices for her growing family.
Phillips encouraged her husband to participate in NeighborWorks® Columbus homebuyer education program with the possibility of purchasing a home in newly developed East Wynnton Park. Phillips and her family had ties to the community and were eager to establish a home in the revitalized neighborhood with its rich heritage and legacy.
“I wanted to be the center of it all for convenience – family, worship center, healthcare”, said Phillips. “It meant a lot to be able to live less than two miles from close-knit family.
Phillips diligently worked to pay off any past debts to move forward in the homebuying process. In less than six months, Natasha and her family closed on their new home.
Over the years, the EWP home has amassed a number of memories – the birth of her son, the graduation of her daughter and the place when her loving father took his last breath – all of which the community embraced and comforted her.   With that same community spirit, Natasha began working at the Michael B. Fluellen Center as a senior program coordinator. “I love the convenience of being able to walk out my front door to my job,” remarked Phillips. “Watching my son get off the bus and running over to Recreation Center is so rewarding and makes me thankful we purchased the right home in the right neighborhood with the right people.  Thank you, NeighborWorks® Columbus.”

Success Story: Takieta Stewart

When Takieta Stewart reflects on NeighborWorks® Columbus, she becomes emotional. As a single mother of three, college graduate and longtime TSYS employee, Stewart has always dreamed of owning a home regardless of irresponsible financial choices she had made in the past. With over $40K in student loan debt, Stewart wondered if her dream was attainable.

“I finished college and was up to my neck in student loans. How could I ever become a homeowner when I am digging myself into a deeper debt?” she recalled.

Stewart took action and reached out to NeighborWorks® Columbus for assistance. It was then she was introduced to her self-proclaimed “guardian angels” – Housing Counselor Denise Henderson and Mortgage Lending Specialist Nonie Milner. Henderson and Milner taught Stewart the importance of credit and its impact.

“Through the debt counseling classes I had to maintain a budget and track my spending,” said Stewart. “I had no idea how much money I was throwing away when I could have been using that same money to clean up the items on my credit.”

With a new mindset and a dedicated housing counselor, Stewart learned to control her budget, save, and pay off past debts. “Ms. Henderson would call and check up on me just to see how I was doing – the awesomeness of this woman is breathtaking,” she said.

As her credit score increased, Stewart transitioned to lending and was provided a budget to locate a house. Somewhat disappointed, “I didn’t think I would get a two bedroom shack let alone a dream home on that budget,” Stewart laughed.

Armed with over 20 years of mortgage loan experience, specialist Nonie Milner coached Stewart through the lending process. Stewart recalled, “Nonie calmly stated, ‘Look girl, you are not only going to find what you want, but you also find your dream home in the area of the city that you want.’ Those words of encouragement made me cry. Not only did I find just any home, I found my four bedroom, 2 ½ bedroom dream home in a wonderful area.”

Despite challenges and last minute closing issues, the Homeownership Team worked with and advocated for Stewart every step of the way.

“Without NeighborWorks® Columbus, my dreams would have never come true. This organization empowers many who thought they would never own a home. It instills hope that all things are possible when you are willing to take control of your finances and work hard to secure a better future for yourself and your family. With deep appreciation, Stewart commented, “Neighborworks® has allowed me to live the American dream and for that I will be eternally grateful.
