Home Sweet Home in Elliott’s Walk

Emma West was tired of paying rent and living in apartments, and she knew she wanted to own a home.

She started her journey almost five years ago and kept hitting road blocks.

“This process was not an easy one for me. I had a bunch of ‘no’s’ along with a lot more excuses of why I couldn’t be a homeowner,” West said.

West works at Wal-Mart, and was told by various sources she did not make enough money or would need a co-signer. But, she did not give up hope.

Earlier this year, Emma was encouraged by her family to come to NeighborWorks Columbus. That’s when the process sped along for her. Just a few months later, Emma is the proud homeowner of not just her first home but a brand-new home in Elliott’s Walk!

“(NeighborWorks Columbus staff) told me I was approved for the loan, and then they told me about Elliott’s Walk. It was just a dream come true,” she said.

Ema closed on her home last month, becoming one of the first homeowners in this historic subdivision that will eventually house hundreds—and she did it despite lots of trials and proudly, without a co-signer!

Home for the holidays

Christmas came early for Juwan Martin this year when she bought her first home.

Juwan was among the first to enter NeighborWorks Columbus’ Homeownership Earned and Reached Together (HEART) Program in 2019, where she leased her home while working toward the goal of homeownership.

“It’s been such a blessing, and I now have something to leave for my children,” said Juwan, single mother to three children.

Prior to moving into her new home, Juwan and her young children lived in a house by the river, which was a breeding ground for allergens.

“For allergy sufferers like me and my son, it was awful just trying to breathe. I woke up with a headache every day,” said Juwan.

After nearly three years in her home, Juwan is happy to say the two have not had an episode like that since. This is the very definition of healthy housing. Not only has her home brought great physical health benefits—her family has thrived in their new space. Now a grandmother, Juwan says her family loves having a home for family to gather and a yard for her children and grandchildren to enjoy.

Cozy Corner Transformation

The story of Cozy Corner’s transformation will be remembered as one of NWC’s most touching stories. Patricia Tyson walked into NeighborWorks Columbus wanting better for her and her family.
After Cozy Corner’s demolition, we decided to build a two-story blue home to pay homage to the historical site. We showed her the blueprint of the home and asked if she wanted to own this home. Mrs. Tyson was excited and started the program.
After pre-approval she reached out to us requesting something special. Something we have never done here at NeighborWorks Columbus. Mrs.Tyson, a women deeply rooted in her Christian faith, requested that we bury her Bible, given to her by her late father, in the home’s foundation.
“I’m breaking generational curses by being the first homeowner in my family. I thank my lord and savior, Jesus Christ, and the wonderful staff at NeighborWorks Columbus.” Patricia Tyson

Ms. Coleman’s success story!

Ms. Coleman is a mother to two young children, ages 3 and 9, and she also is caretaker to her father who is an amputee. She was living in an apartment where her kids shared a room, and it was her goal to find a home that she could give everyone their own space.
She started with NeighborWorks in the homeownership program in August 2019. In February, she decided to try a different route and ended up losing money in the process. She ended up having to live with her mother for two months after her apartment lease ended.
We showed her a newly renovated home in North Highland, and she loved it. It was her goal to get settled in a home before school started.
Ultimately, Ms. Coleman is a proud new homeowner, and she said she also gained valuable knowledge on budgeting and money management that will set her up for a lifetime of success!

The Dream Covid-19 Couldn’t Stop

When Jessica Smith came to NeighborWorks Columbus last summer, she was a woman on a mission. A mission to transition from her overpriced rental property into a home of her own.

This would not be an easy task, but she was willing to do whatever it took. After meeting with our homeownership counselor, Ms. Smith was informed that she’d need to improve her credit before being approved to purchase a home.

She attended our financial fitness courses to enhance her budgeting & debt management skills. Ms. Smith also attended our homeownership workshops to learn the ins & outs of the homebuying process.

All of her hard work finally paid off when Ms. Smith closed on a beautiful 3-bedroom 2-bath home this past April. “It feels great being able to call something my own. It makes me feel accomplished. I feel like if I can own a home, I can do anything I put my mind to,” she said.
